Interview: Maria — from Coronie to the Netherlands
Maria talks about her youth in Coronie and why coconut oil still means home to her.
Maria (62) grew up in Coronie and has lived in the Netherlands since the eighties. There's always a jar of coconut oil in her kitchen. "Not the one from the supermarket," she says. "That smells different. When I open our oil, I'm back for a moment."
She uses the oil for pom, for her skin and hair, and sometimes just to smell it. "My grandchildren know Coronie mainly from my stories. But they taste it. That's enough."
